ALICIA KEYS SPEAKS WITH PASSION IN INTERVIEW WITH GIANT MAGAZINE

PASSION MAGAZINE NOVEMBER/DECEMBER ISSUE
GIANT MAGAZINE DECEMBER/JANUARY 2008 ISSUE

ON HER NEW ALBUM

“It’s still me,” says Keys over dinner. “It’s more of an evolution than a departure. I came into this game at nineteen, at the most transitional phase of a young woman’s life.”

ON THE TABLOIDS:

“I guess the way I roll is really low-key,” she says with a shrug and then concedes, “I guess it is pretty amazing. I was looking at a magazine earlier and thinking, ‘How is it that two people are on a boat in the middle of the ocean and there’s a picture of them there?’ Like, seriously, how does somebody know when you’re gonna be on a boat in the middle of the ocean? That’s crazy!”

ON DEPRESSION:

“There were definitely things going on with me that weren’t right,” she admits. “I was feeling so sad all the time, and I couldn’t shake it. I couldn’t sleep. Musically, I would try to create, and I’d be feeling so anxious and judgmental. The things I was hearing in my head—the chord changes, the vocals and the lyrics—were just weird. I was trippin’. I guess you could say I was losing it…”

ON WHY SHE IS SECRETIVE

“My mom wears her emotions on her sleeve. She can’t hide how she feels,” Keys says. “That’s why I’m so reserved ’cause she’s so external.”

ON HER LOVE LIFE:

“I definitely found my partner,” she says. “I know he is somebody who will always be special to me and that we’re always going to be in each other’s lives.”
